Salon of the Independents
The Salon des Artistes Independants was established because of the "rigid and exclusive policies of the official Salon" 1. The official Salon had a monopoly within the art world in the 17th, 18th, and early 19th century in regards to the teaching and the exhibition of art. Many artists were being rejected entry into the exhibition due to new style or colour technique being used. It was then that many impressionist painters decided to form their own group and by "1884 the Societe des Artistes Independants had been founded" 2. It was founded by Odilon Redon, George Seurat, and Paul Signac, along with some others. 3. The goal of this group was to have exhibitions that would include work from any artist that wanted to showcase their art. 4. Signac was influential in the starting of the salon as it was important to him that independent artists be able to exhibit their work. 5. The Salon des Artistes Independants was influential in that it allowed many artists to present ideas and changes that were being ensued regardless of the rules. This group enabled the creative process to continue as there was support from other artists. This society is still utilized today and has showcased many artists that have had international acclaim.
The first show that the Salon of the Independents held was "in the pavillion of the city of Paris, included paintings by Odilon Redon, Henri-Edmond Cross, Paul Signac, Paul Cezanne, Paul Gauguin, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Vincent van Gogh, and George Seurat...By 1905 Henri Rousseau, Pierre Bonnard, Henri Matisse, and the Fauves had all exhibited at this annual show." 6.
